The Botan Tarot is a visually captivating tarot deck created by Addi Miyako. Inspired by Art Nouveau and Japanese folklore, this deck is a true work of art. The cards are illustrated in watercolor, featuring beautiful indigo edges, and come in a stylish deep purple slipcase with a peach-colored ribbon.
Unique Symbolism and Inspiration
The deck is named after the Japanese word “Botan,” meaning peony, a flower symbolizing bravery, prominently featured on the cards. Miyako painted the cards in her grandmother’s house, drawing inspiration from Japanese children’s stories and her family history.
Deck Composition
The deck includes 22 Major Arcana cards, painted in 2017, and 56 Minor Arcana cards, painted in 2019. The Major Arcana features a contemporary design influenced by Art Nouveau and Japanese flowers, while the Minor Arcana reimagines folklore characters and symbols from plants and animals.
Special Cards and Design
Each card is a masterpiece, with highlights like the Sun card with its firework flower earring and the Emperor as a falconer. The Magician features traditional symbols as tattoos, and the Tower card reflects Miyako’s personal history. The kintsugi illustration on the Ace of Cups emphasizes that no one is too broken to give and receive love.
Guidebook and Extras
The deck comes with a simple mini guide, but for more insight, there is an accompanying zine available. This zine contains beautiful color reproductions of the cards and detailed explanations of the artistic choices.
